Well summer is here in my part of the world and that means school’s out and hurricane season has officially begun. You see, I live in South Florida where hurricane season begins on June 1 through and including November 30. Talk about managing risk!

As a project manager in South Florida, your risk planning includes mitigating for hurricanes. If you are planning to deploy any system, you try to minimize selecting a go-live date during that time. If you do have to go-live, you run through all the “what-ifs” in your mind, prepare all the mitigation strategies, and watch the weather channel constantly. PMI Hardship Provision

A Hardship Provision is available to any PMI member whose financial condition has changed drastically and sufficiently so that a member would have difficulty renewing their membership.

A member must be in good standing for at least three previous years to qualify for the Hardship Provision. Under this provision, a member is granted waiver for one year of PMI Membership dues and one year of dues for membership in any two PMI Component of which the applicant was a member the previous year.  The Hardship Provision may be granted for a maximum of two years for each member.

To apply for consideration, send a letter explaining the nature of the hardship, along with the invoice, to the attention of the Manager, Membership Services, Glenn Farrow at PMI.  The address for PMI is:

Know your PMBOK® Guide — Fourth Edition

An Overview Given by Project Management Institute (PMI)

With more than two million copies in circulation, PMBOK® Guide is considered one of the most critical resources for project professionals worldwide. On 31 December 2008, PMI released updates to its four foundational standards. And one of these standards is A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK® Guide).

The PMBOK® Guide--Fourth Edition reflects the evolving knowledge within the profession of project management. Like previous editions it represents generally recognized good practice for most projects most of the time in the profession.

 

Volunteer of the Year Award Winners

During the Annual Business Meeting in Denver, Colorado on October 18th, the PMI-ISSIG Board of Directors presented Volunteer of the Year awards to Ed Streich, Jay Bradshaw, Prakash Vaidhyanathan and Yong Li. Listed below are excerpts from the comments for each as listed on their recommendation letter to the Board:

  • "Ed Streich, PMP is currently Chair of Greater Toronto Information Systems Local Interest Group in Toronto. Ed has shown extreme dedication, perseverance and foresight in leading the Greater Toronto Information Systems Local Interest Group in Toronto to greater heights. Under his leadership the attendances in the monthly member meetings have increased, programs have become more diversified and relationship with the PMI Southern Ontario Chapter has become closer."
  • "Jay has been a dedicated and hard working volunteer. He continues to help the PDS and helps the ISSIG as a whole. He is a team player and promotes positive ideas and attitude. I'd like to recognize volunteers that are from the 'behind the scenes' and one of them would be Jay."
  • "Prakash has successfully coordinated and completed all of the ISSIG Bits issues on time. The completion of these issues for ISSIG members is critical communication."
  • "Yong's effort in understanding and presenting the data from PMI DEP and Google analytics help the board and individual board members make decisions regarding member services."

Each recipient will be awarded a letter of recognition signed by Subbu Thangaval and a $50 dollar gift card. Please join us in congratulating these four volunteers for their excellent contributions to PMI-ISSIG in 2008.
